How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture is an ancient therapeutic technique rooted in traditional  Chinese medicine. Practitioners insert fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow, or "qi," along meridians. This stimulation promotes balance and harmony within the body,  which can alleviate a variety of physical and mental health issues.  Acupuncture is commonly used to manage pain, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.

At Boulder Sports Acupuncture Acupuncture, we believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. Our experienced practitioners use a combination of acupuncture, herbal medicine, and lifestyle recommendations to promote healing and balance in the body.

What Does a Treatment Look Like

In general an acupuncture appointment typically follows these general steps:

  1. Consultation: At the beginning of the appointment, I will conduct a thorough consultation with the you. This includes discussing your medical history, current health concerns, and any specific symptoms you are experiencing. I may also inquire about lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise, and stress levels, to gain a comprehensive understanding of your condition.
  2. Diagnosis: Based on the information gathered during the consultation, I will make a diagnosis according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. I will identify specific acupuncture points that need attention to address your imbalances or health issues.
  3. Treatment Plan: I will explain the treatment plan t0 you, including the number of sessions required and the expected duration of each session. I may also discuss any lifestyle recommendations, such as dietary changes or exercises, to support the acupuncture treatment.
  4. Acupuncture Treatment: You will then lie down on a comfortable treatment table, usually fully clothed. However is some cases where a back treatment is indicated, you will have to remove some clothing but will be properly draped. I will use sterilized, thin needles to gently insert them into the selected acupuncture points. The sensation of needle insertion is often described as a mild tingling or a dull ache. The needles are typically left in place for about 15-30 minutes, during which you can relax.
  5. Post-Treatment Evaluation: After the needles are removed and we will discuss how the you felt during the session and any immediate changes in symptoms or sensations. I may provide additional recommendations for self-care or follow-up treatments, depending on your progress.
  6. Follow-Up Appointments: Acupuncture is often administered in a series of sessions, which may range from a few weeks to several months, depending on the condition being treated. Follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed to track progress and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
